Pictures from cross-country drive

Sun, Mar 16, 2003; by Dave Winer.

Day 1

Beginning of trip, Robert's Market, Woodside, CA.

San Francisco skyline: #1 #2 #3 #4.

Central Valley, California -- just west of Davis, CA: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7.

Donner Lake, in the Sierras: #1 #2.

East of Femeley, NV: #1 #2.

Driving across the Nevada high desert.

Lovelock, NV.

West of Winnemucca at sunset.

Day 2

Mountains outside Winnemucca.

Golconda Summit. More mountains somewhere in Nevada.

The Great Salt Desert in Utah.

Gas station in Delle, Utah.

I got off the Interstate to take a loop around Salt Lake City.

Now this was a bing. First close look at a Wasatch mountain. They are something else.

Utah 228 wins the award for the most beautiful road on the cross-country drive. The first hundred miles of I-70 wasn't bad either.

Another one of those ironic sign pics.

Day 3

The Green River at dawn.

First look at the Colorado River at Fruita, CO.

Colorado River, just east of Grand Junction at Parachute, CO.

Glenwood Canyon is one of the most amazing places to put an Interstate highway.

Entering the tunnel at the end of Glenwood Canyon.

At the summit of the Rockies, the continental divide, lots of melting snow -- half of it running into the Pacific, half into the Atlantic.

Driving into Denver. The first big city since San Francisco.

Whew. Glad to make it out of there.

The road straightens out again.

Day 4

Driving across Kansas, with fog.

In Kansas they tell you where the Astronauts live.

Day 5

Walking around Vandalia, IL -- very early morning. It was an early capital of Illinois, in the time of Abraham Lincoln.

Day 6

Didn't take more pics until Day 6, in Pennsylvania.

Then over the Delaware Water Gap, into New Jersey, over the George Washington Bridge, and onto Lawn Guyland.
